Live From The Sydney Opera House: Sir Charles Mackerras Sydney Symphony CD
A double-CD celebrating Australia's greatest living conductor, Sir Charles Mackerras' return to the Orchestra he once called his own. The recording, released on the Sydney Symphony Live label, features music by Dvorak, Smetana, Janacek, and Richard Strauss all recorded live in October 2007 as part of the Sydney Symphony's 75th anniversary celebrations.
The new release allows audiences to relive these acclaimed performances, including a thrilling interpretation of Janacek's Sinfonietta, which drew great acclaim. The recording represents the Sydney Symphony's first commercial release to capture Sir Charles' long-standing relationship with the Orchestra.
He began playing with the Sydney Symphony as an oboist in 1943 and at 20 became the youngest principal in the ranks; he conducted the Sydney Opera House opening concert in 1973 and was the Sydney Symphony's first Australian Chief Conductor from 1982 to 1985. Now a British resident, Mackerras returns regularly, conducting music close to his heart: Czech repertoire, but also great choral works and romantic masterpieces such as Richard Strauss' Also sprach Zarathustra (included on this new release).
